Fishing in the Basin

Another Thursday fishing with Shifty is in the books. This week we ventured East into the Uintah Basin to a lake we like but don't frequent. The lake is home to huge Rainbow trout which I like and Smallmouth bass which Shifty likes and it has Perch. We left Shifty's place at 4:30 Thursday morning to make the nearly two-hour drive east.

We made it to the lake as the sun rose over the eastern horizon and it was a spectacular sunrise. We launched and immediately started trolling. We ran hard bait on light line. We trolled for at least an hour if not longer through our normal lanes and venturing into other lanes trying to get a hit. No such luck we struck out on the trout bite.

We moved toward the banks and started fishing for the smallmouth bass. They have nice sized smallmouth bass in this lake, a couple years ago I caught one of my biggest if not biggest smallmouth bass in it. Hoping to repeat that day I was excited to get on a couple big smallmouth bass. Yep, we fished for another hour moving and changing tactics. Covering the water column top to bottom and not even getting a follow on anything. We moved back to an area that showed lots of fish on the finder while we were trolling in about 6o feet of water and Shifty put on a drop shot setup and finally got a one to the boat. In the meantime, another boat arrived and went to an area we had not gone into that much and we got curious. So we made our way toward the boat fishing the bank as we moved along. This is where we finally found some fish that were willing to play.  We caught a handful of smallmouth bass and perch along this stretch.

The day wasn't a complete bust we found some new areas to fish and caught a few for the day. No big fish but fish all the same.  By 2:30 we were spent and ready to call it a day.
