Yuba Pike Hunting

Thursday 4/13 picked up Shifty at 5 am and headed south. Yuba was the destination and Pike were our target. Shifty put away his ice gear for the season and hasn't unwrapped his boat yet so he loaded up with me. We made it to the water by sunrise and the wind wasn't too bad at the ramp. Yuba can get very nasty with wind and the weather stations predicted 25-30 mile hour winds. We launched and got on our way to where we thought the Pike would be.

We turned the corner to go into Painted Rocks leg of the reservoir and met the wind head on with swells already at a couple feet. We powered on to our destination. We fished the rocky shoreline for a couple hours and only managed an ugly carp caught by Shifty in the tail so it made for a fun fight.

We ran to the dam but they already have the buoys out blocking access, for what reason who knows, but we stayed clear and fished just outside the buoys. We fished here for another hour without the wind hindering our fishing. Seeing nothing on the electronics and getting nothing we made our way back into Painted Rocks, this time going all the way to the island and fishing shorelines. The wind was getting worse as the day progressed. Our last ditch efforts were in a couple coves on the north shores. Fishing the rest of the morning in the coves and getting no reaction to anything we threw we called it a day.

We should have gone to Starvation where the day before reports were showing huge Bows and Browns being boated, but Shifty isn't much for trout off the ice. It was good to be on the boat again and with Shifty. We had fun even though he only got one tail hooked carp. LOL
