Strawberry Late Season Ice Fishing

Thursday Jim and I went to Strawberry, to test run the new all-terrain I bought at the SLC ISE.  An eight wheeled all drive amphibious machine. Fishing happened too.

We pulled into the parking lot at Strawberry Marina at 7:00 am and unloaded the rig. We didn't know what to expect. We took off for the lake and started across the bay. We thought about Mud Creek, and then I remembered the one spot I always wanted to try during ice season, the narrows. So we turned and made our way across the lake.  The speed was not fast by any means, we were told it would go upwards of 30 mph but we got no where near that topping out at 14 mph. The rig left very little foot print on the crusty ice.

We got to our destination after a bit of time and cut some holes.  We were in 10 - 15 feet of water in a bay that during late fall season always produce big cutts. Jim got the first hit in about ten minutes and was late on the draw. We got a few more hits and couldn't get the hook set quick enough. I got a hit that took both of my hooks in one big tug, I use palomar knots and it didn't even slow it down. Jim got another hit and had to the hole only to have it get off as it entered the hole. The bite shut down so we moved to another location.

The rig traveled well over the harden crust of the lake leaving very little trace of ever being there. Still not much speed out of it.  We stopped cut a couple holes and seen nothing got nothing in 30 minutes.  We moved to our last destination of the morning back into the marina bay in a spot that is always good for a couple fish. But after 30 minutes of not seeing a fish on the finder and getting no hits we decided to call it a day.

We had the lake to ourselves that morning, not another fisher on the ice as far as we could see.  No fish were caught today but it was a great morning test drive.
