Trout Slam @ Scofield Reservoir Utah

Last week I got Jim back on the Fish Steeler and out of the office. We spent the morning at Scofield arriving at sunrise and watched the water look like it was raining there were so many fish hitting the surface. The water had a small chop on it. As usual, the grass and weeds are getting thick. Trolling this lake becomes near impossible as the season progresses.

We started our day in Madison Bay. We put on medium depth crankbaits, jerk baits, and spoons trolling through it a couple times. Still watching the water look like it was boiling with so many fish surfacing. The spoon got a hit quickly but it quick released and never got another a hit on it. I finally decided to stop and throw jerk baits. Jim tried spoons, spinners, and other hard baits. The jerk bait was working and I landed a couple before Jim put one on as well. We caught Tiger and Cutthroat trout in Madison Bay on jerk baits and then the bite went dead. So we moved on. I put on pop gear and a worm and second pole with a white Bomber A. I cast the Bomber and get the line set and the fish hit it immediately. That was the funniest hit of the day. We trolled for a little while trying to find fish. I found a couple more cutthroat on the pop gear. Jim got a tiger on a Jake's.

We continued to troll and then I started catching chubs! I got six in total on the pop gear. I did my duty and removed them from the population. I hadn't caught a chub in a couple years so it was a little disappointing to catch them. Was hoping the walleye, wiper, and tiger musky were going to eradicate them. The grass really started getting bad and getting in the blades on the pop gear so we pulled in the lines and went to the island.

Anchored up at the island Jim threw out some power bait and sank it. I put on spoons and cast for the hits. Jim started off with a cutthroat and a couple more off the back deck. I was throwing metal off the front deck. I changed up often and got a couple of cutthroat and tiger trout. I tried a couple crankbaits but the grass and weeds were to thick around the island.

The bite slowed so we moved toward the river inlets and found so much grass and weeds we kept moving back around a point that showed a lot of fish on the finder. We anchored up and Jim put out his powerbait and I threw metal off the front. Jim got into the Rainbow here and that completed our trout slam for Scofield. Again I changed lures often and caught a few tigers, cutthroat, and a chub on a spoon! That was a first for me to get a chub on a spoon. We fished here the rest of the morning and called it when things slowed down. It was early afternoon and we were getting hungry. We had a great morning!
