Fly Fishing on Mammoth Reservoir

Tuesday morning, I met up with Jason Golly and threw some loops at Mammoth Reservoir. Jason is a good friend and we had planned on getting together all summer but with the multiple interruptions we both had this was our summer fly fishing trip. We met at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon and made our way to Fairview. Stopped and picked up a little breakfast and supplies and drove through Fairview canyon to Skyline Drive arriving at Mammoth around 7:30 am.

25 degrees is what the temp. read in the truck. We brought our gear to the front of the truck and readied ourselves for a cold fishing morning. We were floating today, I had my pontoon and Jason was in his U-boat. Both of thinking, this is a little crazy, but we were excited to fish. So we geared up and got as many layers on as possible and readied ourselves for the plunge.

Jason made it to the water first and was throwing loops quickly. An accomplished fly fisher he was working his fly rod like a pro. We were focusing on the Tiger trout that Mammoth holds. So wooly buggers were being used to get down to them. I finally made it to the water and got my line in with a big red wooly bugger. Jason was working a brown bugger.

We fished for a good hour getting hits now and then but not hooking any up. Jason changed over to a yellow pattern and immediately hooked up. I was a distance away from him but could see that it was of decent size and good a fighter. Jason stayed with the yellow and landed three fish rather quickly. I on the other hand got one hit and changed to a yellow pattern I had in the fly box. Got a couple more hits but didn’t hook one up.

We fished until 11:00 and our feet and fingers were numb from the cold. Jason ended up landing five very nice Tiger trout. Me not so much, hahaha. Fishing hot one day cold the next but it was still a great day on the pond with a good friend!! Next time won’t be as far off as this one and we will throw more loops and share more memories!
