Willard Bay, Another Shot

Thursday's with Shifty, we started out at 5 am on the road to Willard Bay in northern Utah. A small man-made freshwater bay on the Great Salt Lake. This was the second try on this lake for me. We arrived at sunrise only to find out that the battery on the boat was dead, literally. I pulled one of the trolling batteries and we got it started and launched.

We trolled the "Island" which is where the reports were saying the hottest fishing was happening. Catching on the other hand, at least for Shifty and I was another story. We trolled the hot lures for about an hour and got nothing, but figured we trolling to fast. So I had another idea how to get the trolling battery back in the front, so we docked and tried it and figured out finally and go the trolling motor back online.

We saw a couple boats running other lanes, so we headed that way and dropped the trolling motor. We ran a number of baits behind us, but no luck. We pulled the trolling motor and went back to the island. We started in another boat's path following at a distance hoping to pick up on what they were doing. again nothing was happening we trolled the lanes they were and then broke off and went to "Freeway Bay" for another hour changing everything we could think of. Nothing! We went back toward the island and decided to throw and crank. By this time it was 11:30 am and we hadn't gotten even a bump.

THE BUGS!!! Were terrible and it was getting hot!

We fished for another half hour or so, and I finally hooked up a Crappie on a grub jig. we fished for a little while longer and got nothing and called it. We went to Smith and Edwards and buried our failure with a tour of the shop. We ate the Burger Bar and finished our sorrows off with a big cheeseburger.

We decided to hit Utah Lake when we got home.

We got back to the house at 2:30 and decided to hit UL at 4 pm. I met up at Shifty's and went to Provo Boat Harbor to catch some white bass. We fished about an hour before I finally got a white bass to take my spinner. we fished for a few hours. Devin McClellan and his son Jace showed up and started catching fish with their first casts! I felt like throwing my pole in the water!! I ended up with four white bass for the evening and Shifty ended up 3 or 4 we couldn't remember. Devin and Jace ended with 10 or so. It was hot and the bugs were horrible and Shifty was tired of having the snakes swim around him. So we pulled our lines in and went to the river for a little bit, but it was it too high and fast for anything yet.

We stopped and got us an Icee! Great day on the water, need a new battery for the Fish Steeler. Headed to Costco for a golf cart battery! Won't need to return to Willard Bay until the bugs die off!!! Always a good day with Shifty Outdoors!
