Rainbows and Smallies!

"Thursday with Shifty" We headed to Deer Creek and were on the water by sunrise. Targeting trout in the morning. I turned the boat toward the dam and started trolling along the roadside. We had hits not too long after getting our lines set.  Missing the first couple and LDR a couple we finally coaxed one to the boat and netted it.

We ran the buoy line most of the morning and landed 8 Rainbow trout culled a couple but kept a few in the live well.  We ended up with 4 at the 2-pound mark and a couple 1.5 lb range. The bite slowed down so we stowed the trolling motor and kicked the Yamaha into action and went to the top end of Rainbow Bay and started trolling again.

Started to troll the roadside along the cliffs and quickly got a hit and another Rainbow on the line. Getting it back in the lake we kept moving along and made it the point of the island before we got another hit and Shifty landed it.  We got a double up on this pass out across the lake, with the double up we called it for trout and put the 8th rainbow in the live well.

Shifty is always looking for bass so we put the trolling poles away and started casting hard baits along the bank. We fished the rest of the morning for smallmouth bass and landed a few. Shifty ended up with 3 to the boat and I landed a couple. One was a PB for Deer Creek for me weighing in at 2lbs. We had a blast, the water was clear and at 57 degrees so soon the bass will go into spawn and start getting crazy.  Trout fishing should stay good thru July and into the doldrums of summer heat.
