Rainbows a Plenty

Tuesday I picked up longtime friend, teammate, and neighbor for a long overdue fishing trip.  Layne and I grew up in the same neighborhood and played football together through high school. We then became neighbors as adults, we have visited his property called the "Bear's Den" and stayed in touch. Layne also helped my dad coach the Orem Freshman Football team for a few years. This trip has been discussed for a couple years now and our schedules never lined up until now.

I picked Layne up at 5:30 and we went to Deer Creek. When I picked him up it was raining and it didn't stop until we got to the lake. Once at the lake, we found glass conditions and we were the only ones on the water. It rained off and on us most of the morning but nothing hard or crazy. No wind!! At least until 10 am.

We set the leadlines and pop gear trolled the roadside. Layne had the hot color and was on fish quickly. The Jack of Diamonds was getting fish to the boat. Layne had boated 3 fish and lost a couple more before I got my first fish on a prism color.  We tried some Bandits but no takers on them in the early morning.
Layne was catching and missing fish most of the morning. We talked and shared stories and reminisced about past times. We had a great day! Layne definitely caught the most fish all good sized rainbow trout.  I switched up colors and threw the Parakeet back out to try for some shallow runners and got a couple to bite. One fish finally broke the bait tail off and that was that they didn't want any other color. Layne had two fish snap 20 lb test of like it was toilet paper, we figure they were huge rainbow trout.

At the end of our morning, the wind was really blowing and we had boated 20 fish put 8 very nice rainbow trout in the live well. We loaded the boat and headed home at noon. It was a great morning and we have planned a couple more for future outings so keep an eye out for the reports.

Broken by a beast!

Fixed and ready to go again!
