Saturday morning we met up at 8 am to go fish Starvation. Parker works swing shift so we let him get a few hours of sleep before we left. The day was supposed to be bluebird and hot turned into windy and whitecaps! We arrived at Starvation State park at 10 am and launched amid winds of 15 plus mph. We shot across the main channel to the north wall and started to troll. We went with light gear for the day, and Parker brought his downrigger to see how it would work, he bought it for his pontoon boat.
We got our lines set and started trolling, the wind made it impossible for the 55 lb thrust Minn Kota to navigate so we used the big engine and with the wind, we were at the right speed. It took a little bit to get our first hit and it was on the surface, with the purple Rapala. Parker landed it and the games were on.
Jimmy got the next hit only to lose it at the boat. Parker changed out his downrigger line to a Jakes and he got a fish quickly. My line wasn't red hot but I stuck with my purple Sunfire lure. Jimmy brought one to the net next and he was excited, he hadn't been fishing in over eight months with work and a couple injuries he was healing from.
I managed to get my first on the Sunfire to the boat and got a picture with and in the live well it went. We fished until early afternoon and got nine in the well. Had number 10 online but the rainbow trout jumped and spit the lure at the boat Jimmy started us off with a miss and finished off the day with a spit lure.....lol. He was bummed but still happy to get out. It has been months since we have been able to get out together. The downrigger worked great and got a number of fish on it and the jakes lure. Great day on the lake with my sons Jim and Parker.
