Thursday with Shifty, we went to Jordanelle to catch some brown trout and fill our limit with smokers. We did that and then some with the late morning and afternoon fishing for smallmouth bass. We arrived at the ramp at 6:30 a little later than we wanted but we the only boat on the water when we launched. We headed to a new area of the lake looking for the brown trout. Seen a report by our state office with enough background that I knew where they were located.
We motored to the other side of the lake and started trolling. I ran a rainbow bolo and husky jerk on my poles and Shifty ran a Gulls Custom LLC dodger with a wedding ring trailer. I got two hits pretty quick on both poles but missed them both. Another hit and this I hooked up for our first fish for the morning. A small rainbow trout, it was released quickly. Then Shifty loaded up his rod with a nice fighting brown trout, it found it's way to the live well. We trolled a couple lanes in the spot and found the same one would produce a number of fish this morning. Shifty got another brown trout and while taking pictures of that catch I had a hit and landed a nice sized rainbow trout. Both found their way into the live well. We fished for another hour in this lane and it turned off after a couple more catch and releases and a keeper bow.
We ran to the back of the lake, into the Rockcliff area, where the river was dumping in large amounts of water and debris. We started fishing for trout and smallmouth bass. This area wasn't productive a couple followers but no takers, so we moved to another spot and then another and then another and found a couple smallmouth bass.
We ended up in a bay we named "Frog Bay" with a rock that looks like a frog watching us fish. This bay turned out to be the most productive. Shifty started us off with a large rainbow trout and then I got a smallmouth and then another rainbow trout from Shifty. Shifty limited the boat with trout in the bay all caught on crankbaits of different colors and depths. I got a couple decent smallmouth bass and Shifty caught a couple smallmouth as well.
We fished until 5:00 pm and decided to call it a day. We kept saying okay ion 15 minutes if no hit we will go well that took until 5 pm, every 3rd or 4th cast one of us would hook up. We ended the day with 25 or so fish caught between the two of us. We headed in only to find the wind was howling in the main channel of the lake and we navigated 2-3 foot swells until we got to the safety of the marina bay. We questioned all the boats launching seeing that they could see the white caps and swells. We loaded and took a couple stringer pics and filleted our catch. A great day on the lake!
