Pitching Tube Jigs at The Berry

A couple weeks ago Shifty and I went to Strawberry to fish for the large Cutthroat Trout that start running the shallows and weed lines in the fall.  We got on the lake about 7:00 am, sunrise.  We were on the Barnacle, Shifty's boat, which as the day progressed I was happy he was at the helm. We made our way back into the meadows area of Strawberry, we were the only boat to begin with.  Later in the morning the bay became dotted with many other boats.

We stopped and threw out the first tube jig and on the retrieve sure enough I hooked up the first fish of the day.  Got it to the boat and it gave ahead shake and away it went.  Shifty got set up and started casting and landed the first fish of the day a nice average sized Cutthroat.

We moved into the bank and back into deeper water and did fairly better in the deeper water.  As the morning progressed though the wind started to blow. By 10 am it was capping and we moved into the narrows to escape it. We fished all the way back through the narrows the rest of the day and we caught 20 fish total for the day and Shifty caught a nice bruiser Cutthroat on a crank bait, he thought he was fishing for bass, but a nice 3.5 pound cutthroat was his reward.

The wind kept him busy navigating the boat. We would fins a pocket we thought would be good, but soon it was blowing as well. We did locate some nice points to remember for ice season.  We took off for home about 2:00 pm and had a good day throwing tube jigs in the morning and crank baits in the late morning, early afternoon.  The wind cutting back across the lake had the swells at about 3 feet, but the Barnacle cruised right through them. On the way home we stopped a the bridge and checked out the Kokanee run.
