Strawberry on Ice

Thursday morning met up with Mac and Jaxon at 5:30.  We drove up the canyon to Heber and stopped at One Stop for our morning breakfast sandwich and chocolate milk.  Jaxon had a little fun with Shifty, he was there in his routine. We left and arrived at Strawberry Bay Marina at sunrise. We fished east of the lodge in the marina bay. The fog burned off with the morning sun. It was a bluebird day.  Starting out at -3 and getting up to 16 degrees by the time we left, we didn't set a tent since there was no wind.

We started out at around 30 feet in depth and moved in from there ending up at 15 feet of water. The ice was between 4 and 6 inches thick. We each had our chances at catching fish.  We were using paddle bugs and flashers tipped with shrimp, meals and wax worms.

We fished until early afternoon and continued to get hits but not hooking them.  Jaxon finally hooked a nice cutthroat trout and decked it. After a couple pictures he released it. Strawberry has the slot limit of 15 inches to 22 inches for cutthroat and anything with cutthroat markings has to be released. Most everything you catch now-a-days is in the slot limit and has cutthroat markings.

For those anglers who enjoy the catch but not so much eating them it is worth the trip to Strawberry. Once in a while you will catch a rainbow or a slot buster, but generally you go knowing you will be returning all your fish back to the lake. It was to get out with Mac and Jaxon again.
