Ice Fishing in the Uinta Basin

Thursday Parker and I got to go out on the ice together.  A rare occasion these days, he is neck deep in life right now finishing his PhD in Chemistry at BYU, working a full time job on the weekends, two kids and a wife, that is understanding of his need for retreats.

We fished a lake that we know has Large Mouth, Small Mouth Bass, Perch, and huge Trout.  The trip out was eventful going over Daniel's and Strawberry Basin but we made it unscathed. Got to the lake at 7:00 am and on the water quickly after to get the tent set since Parker realized when he looked for his clothes he left them in his car at home. Tent was needed fast. We walked out about 5 yards from the ramp and set up camp. Cut a fast hole to see how deep of water we were in and we perfect 15 feet.

Set the tent and holes and got lines in.  Parker landed the first of what we thought was going to be many in 10 minutes. A rainbow trout keeper and we were on the board! Two more fish came through and then nothing for the rest of the morning. We cut a couple more holes and looked around but nothing was moving. We fished until noon changing up everything we had but couldn't get another sniff.

We packed up and went to the Bluebell Store and Grill and got lunch. Returned to the north end of the lake and decided to call it a day after looking things over. The ice was 10 inches thick with a layer of slush about 4 inches thick. We had a great day visiting and catching a couple fish. Definitely was not hot catching. We have really decided that you are very lucky or mobile to catch a lot of fish on the ice, time for transportation other than our canam, it gets stuck way too often.
