Grandsons Slaying Cutthroats at the Field

Saturday morning picked up Jimmy and his boys Max and Harrison. We made our way to Scofield and I was going to try something I have never really targeted on the boat.  Scofield gets extremely grassy in the later summer months so I decided to try jerk baits and spoons for the day.  I told them we may not get a bite but we were going to do it. Even running shallow we stilled picked up our fair share of grass.  I did try some 20-foot divers only to have them load up with grass immediately.  Our best lure was a 1/8th oz kastmaster.  We caught fish on a variety of lures but it was the most effective. We launched at 6:30 and started trolling immediately from the dock. We launched from the Madsen Bay ramp and trolled into the bay.

Trolling with the light gear our first fish came on a Purple Descent F9.  A typical Cutthroat trout for the lake, long and skinny. Harrison landed it with a little help from his dad. We fished back through the lane and got nothing and we ventured out into the main channel and down into the dam leg.  We changed up lures, speeds, and trolling pattern trying to get our next hit.  Once we turned down into the dam leg things picked.

Our next fish came on the kasmaster and Max landed it without help, he is becoming a good fisherman. He released it and recast the line.  We caught quite a few cutthroat trout in this stretch in and out of the dam leg. I put on a 3/4oz kastmaster and started getting hits but every time we reeled in all we had left on it was lips. The leg was good to us! We got 8 more to the boat all cutthroat trout long and skinny.

I wasn't exploring so we made our way to the island. Nothing hit between the dam and island but when we got to the island we immediately had fish on Jake's, Kasmaster and Daredevils. We fished until the weather turned on us and the wind was cranking and the rain was driving. Thought we were in Wyoming with the rain coming at us sideways. The boys ended the morning with 13 fish and we ended at 9 am. Yep, fun times and always good to try new things and have it work out for a good day!!
